I keep coming back to a simple truth: Trust is about relationship. You won’t earn, restore or sustain it in a societal sense without doing what you would do in a personal, healthy relationship. You have to be available. You have to show up, every time—listen with your whole being and dig deep into your repository of experience and knowledge to offer what is useful. And you have to tell the truth—even when it’s hard to hear.
Looking back on 2019, I’m especially proud of the work that KUOW did to strengthen our relationship with our community. We sought truth for our audience everywhere we went, whether it was tracking down answers to your lighthearted questions about berry picking, or your heavier ones about the homelessness crisis.
We met you face-to-face, facilitating lively and meaningful conversations in theaters and at dinner tables. And, knowing that few things can transport us like the intimacy of audio and the power of the human voice, we pursued stories that showed all of us our shared humanity.
I’m not quite sure if this work stands out to me because it was, in some ways, a break from a relentless political news cycle or because human, personal engagement offers the primary hope to heal our divided society. In a world of such division, we sought in our hearts to connect, learn and empathize. And after all, that’s what public media does best.
For those of you exasperated at trying to figure out what to believe and finding yourselves overwhelmed at times—it's ok to rest. It's ok to take a break. But know that you have to come back. The obligation of living in civil society is paying attention, listening and acting. The forces that push us toward distrust and division are tireless, so we must be tireless as well.
As we enter 2020 together, count on KUOW to help you listen even when it’s hard, speak truth to power even when it takes extraordinary courage and stay open even when you want to shut down. You are why we’re here, however you choose to listen and engage. We thank you for being here for us.
Above all, thank you for putting your trust in us. We will work tirelessly to keep earning it.
